The Great Central Railway (GCR) was a railway company in England. The main railway line  was opened in 1899. The building of the railway was really ambitious, but due to financial problems it was closed quite soon -  in 1969.  In the 1960s lots of other country railway lines were closed down by the government of the day as a result of the Beeching Report. One of the reasons for this was the increasing use of motor cars. As you can see the change is really big. The advantage is we can all now enjoy walking and cycling on the old track bed, but a really big disadvantage is that we can no longer travel to  some places by  train and many villages are without a railway service.
